Anthurium Silver × Luxurians
Anthurium sp. 'Silver' × Anthurium luxurians
A cross between Anthurium luxurians and an unidentified species selection traded simply as Anthurium sp. 'Silver' — a plant whose full botanical identity remains undescribed but which contributes a distinctive silver iridescence to its offspring. The luxurians parent overwhelmingly dominates the phenotype: the leaves are thick, heavily bullate, and deeply quilted in the characteristic pebbled, blistered pattern that defines luxurians as the benchmark for physical texture in the velvet anthurium world. What the 'Silver' parent contributes is the foliage's coloration and surface quality — a cool, pewter-toned metallic iridescence diffused across the entire dark quilted surface rather than the defined vein lines typical of crystallinum or magnificum crosses, giving the leaf an almost silvered or galvanized quality in the right light. The sinus is present but partially closed on the mature leaves visible in these plants, the basal lobes nearly meeting — a character that distinguishes this cross from a pure luxurians. Petioles are pinkish-red. The overall impression is of a silver luxurians: all the three-dimensional bullate quilting of the species, overlaid with a metallic pewter cast from the 'Silver' parent's contribution, on a leaf that leans slightly rounder and more closed at the base than pure luxurians.
Provide bright indirect light — good light brings out both the depth of the bullate quilting and the metallic silver surface quality most fully; dim conditions flatten both. Keep the medium consistently evenly moist but never waterlogged, watering when the top inch approaches dryness; use a chunky open epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage. High humidity of 70-85% is essential — the thick luxurians constitution gives this hybrid strong leaf durability, but the silver surface quality and bullate texture development both respond directly to consistent high air moisture. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
